Surrender, Strength & Sanity: August Real Talk from the Mat

Ah, August. The month where we’re supposed to be relaxing—but let’s be honest, most of us are still in the thick of it.

If you’re anything like me, August doesn’t exactly scream “vacation mode.” It’s more like:

  • Kids home (again)
  • Still working (somehow)
  • Trying to keep everyone alive and maybe eat a vegetable
  • Also attempting to be present, peaceful, and grounded?

Honestly, it can feel like juggling flaming swords while standing on a paddleboard in a windstorm. (Just me?)

And yet… this month’s theme is surrender. Not the “curl up under the laundry pile and hide” kind (though I fully support that when needed). I’m talking about Ishvarapranidhana—a yogic concept that’s all about trusting something bigger than ourselves. Letting go of control. Releasing the grip.

Which sounds lovely until you’re staring down a pile of deadlines, a snack-demanding child, and the question, “Did I even shower today?”

But here’s the thing: surrender isn’t about giving up. It’s about softening at the edges. It’s about letting go of the perfectionism, the pressure, and the “all or nothing” energy that tells us if we can’t do it perfectly, we shouldn’t bother.

Surrender, in real life, might look like:

  • Doing 10 minutes of movement instead of skipping your practice entirely
  • Lying on the floor and breathing while the chaos continues around you
  • Choosing to trust that what you are doing is enough

Try This: The “Still Doing My Best” Practice Here’s a super simple somatic practice you can do anytime the August overwhelm kicks in:

🦋 Butterfly Hug Reset

  • Cross your arms over your chest so each hand rests on the opposite upper arm (self-hug style).
  • Gently tap back and forth—left, right, left, right—slowly and rhythmically.
  • Do this for 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Breathe. Let your body feel held.

It’s like your nervous system is getting a little reminder: “You’re safe. You’re here. We got this.”

Final Thoughts: Come As You Are Living Lotus Online isn’t here for performative wellness or rigid routines. We’re about showing up messy, real, and with compassion—whether you’ve got 10 minutes between lunch packs and emails, or a quiet evening to yourself (rare, but we dream).

This month, inside the studio, we’re exploring Fierce Foundations—a playlist of bold, sweaty, empowering classes (HIIT, Yoga, Pilates, Weights) balanced by a calming stress-reducing meditation. It’s about building real strength while remembering to rest

Join us online and meet a community of like-minded folks also just doing their best, surrendering the chaos, and showing up anyway.
