Hey there, friends! July’s here, the sun’s out, the kids are either running wild or glued to screens (or both), and we’re all somewhere between summer bliss and please let me nap mode. It’s the perfect time to talk about something that feels simple but can get complicated fast: freedom.
Not the “I quit my job and bought a one-way ticket” kind of freedom (although, hey, if that’s you, more power to you!). I’m talking about freedom through movement and mindset—that feeling of being able to move your body and your mind without getting stuck in all the expectations, comparisons, and “shoulds” that sneak in like uninvited guests at a party.
In yoga philosophy, there’s a word for this: Vairagya. Fancy, right? It basically means non-attachment. But it’s not about being aloof or turning into a monk on a mountain. It’s about letting go of the stuff that weighs you down—whether that’s physical tension, mental clutter, or the pressure to “do it right.”
What Does Non-Attachment Even Mean in Real Life?
Let’s get real: non-attachment doesn’t mean you stop caring or trying. It means you learn to show up for yourself with curiosity instead of judgment.
For example:
- Instead of obsessing about whether your plank looks like an Instagram influencer’s, you just hold it for as long as you can without face-planting.
- When you miss a workout, you don’t spiral into the “I’m a failure” vortex. You just say, “Cool, today’s not that day,” and maybe move your shoulders for five minutes before Netflix calls you back.
- You stop attaching your self-worth to your sweat level or how many reps you managed.
In short: you move strong, you rest when you need, and you don’t take it all so seriously.
How to Practice Freedom on and Off the Mat
Here’s a little practice you can try, right now, no yoga pants required (though they’re a bonus):
- Take a slow, deep breath. Feel your feet on the ground.
- Think of one thing that’s been bugging you—could be a tight muscle, a mental nag, or a “to-do” that’s stuck like gum on your shoe.
- Ask yourself: Am I holding onto this because it’s truly important, or is it just taking up space?
- If it’s the latter, try imagining loosening your grip—like opening a clenched fist and letting something fall away.
- Notice how that feels. Spoiler: it’s usually lighter and less exhausting.
Journaling Prompt: Freedom Edition
If you’re a journal person (or want to be), here’s a prompt to chew on:
What am I ready to let go of this summer—in my body, my mind, or my day-to-day? How can I make space for freedom and ease?
Write without censoring yourself. Maybe even write a funny “Dear Attachment” letter telling it to take a hike.
